Fenwick Island

Fenwick Island, Delaware, is a coastal town with a year-round population of about the population about 800. Fenwick Island is actually not an island at all, but rather a narrow peninsula separating the Atlantic Ocean from Little Assawoman Bay. Ocean City, Maryland occupies the southern tip of this peninsula.

Local legend has it that Cedar Island, located in Little Assawoman Bay, was favorited by pirates to bury their treasures. Nobody knows if this is true, but it is clear that the Delaware coastal area was well known as a place for pirates to hide from the law. Unfortunately, two of the favorite hiding places included Cedar Island, wich is nearly washed under the bay, and Seal Island, which washed away around 2010.

Fenwick Island and its neighbors to the north, Bethany Beach and South Bethany are known as “The Quiet Resorts” as a contrast to their louder neighbor, Dewey Beach, and its more cosmopolitan neighbor, Rehoboth Beach. Despite this designation, Fenwick Island is notably less quiet than “the Bethanies” because it sits immediately across the state line from Ocean City, Maryland, which enjoys a lively vacation resort reputation.

Fenwick Island was an unincorporated area between South Bethany and Ocean City, Maryland until July 1953, when the Delaware General Assembly passed an act to incorporate the town. At the time, local residents demanded incorporation so they could prevent the relentless high-rise developments of Ocean City from spreading north into Fenwick Island.
