Selbyville

Selbyville, originally known as Sandy Branch because it is located on a branch of land in the Cypress Swamp at the head of the St. Martin’s River, is home to approximately 2,200 residents. Selbyville proudly traces its history back to 1778.

This thriving little town lies near the state line separating Delaware and Maryland. In its early days, Sandy Branch was home to a grist-mill and saw-mill, wich operated in the late 18th century, a blacksmith, a steam flour-mill, and a store owned by Samuel Selby and moved to Sandy Branch from Maryland in 1842. Sampson Selby began marking packages for delivery to his country store, Selby-Ville. The name stuck, and in 1902 the town incorporated as Selbyville.

By 1918, Selbyville was the major supplier of strawberries for the entire east coast, an industry that remained strong until the 1930s. Today, one of the area’s main employers is Mountaire Farms, a poultry company, which runs a processing plant on Hosier Street. There are still a number of farmers, of both animals and crops, in Selbyville today.

Selbyville is home to Mumford Sheet Metal Works, which once held the world record in 1950 for the largest frying pan. Selbyville is also home to Doyle’s Restaurant, which has recently been recognized by the State of Delaware as the oldest operating diner in the State. Doyle’s still has the original 1930’s diner attached to the main restaurant that is still available for diners to eat at.

You don’t need to be a farmer to enjoy the small-town feel of Selbyville. There are a number of residentail areas with a more modern feel.
